- Fulltext - stop words!?Hi!
I'm running MySQL 4.0.13 and have problem with fulltext search.
I have a column of type 'text' which I fulltext index.
I want to search for an e-mail address but I don't get any matches.
I assume characters like @ . are ignored (stop words).
How can I create an index which contains e-mail addresses?
Eg. How can I edit the list of stop words?
Which are the current stop words?
I'm running MySQL on both Windows and Linux.
Best regards
/Peter

- Importing MySQL in MS AccessHi,
I'm building a shell script that store information in a MySQL 5.0
database. One of the data I store in the table is a text file. I use a
BLOB type for this text data.
If I try to import it in MS Access 2002 the BLOB column is converted
to a OLE type, but when I try to open it in access I get this error:
"A problem occurred while Miscrosoft Access was communicating with the
OLE server or ActiveX Control. Close the OLE server and restart it
outside of Microsoft Access. Then try the original operation again in
Microsoft Access."
I know that it's because MS access doesn't know what type of object it
is and with which program it should open it. But I don't know how I can
tell access the type of object it is. Should I create a module to
handle these objects? I'm new to access databases so I don't know where
I should start. If someone has any tips or codes I should use please le
me know.
Should I use another type instead of BLOB?
By the way the MySQL database is created from mysql command line inside
a shell script.
Thanks in advance

- MySQL & API C on DEVCPPI need to write a simple C program to pick up the input and then puts
it into a MySQL database.
Unfortunately the mysql API C, provided with the download edition,
don't work on DEVCPP.
Do you use this API on Win-32? by which compiler? Have you a simple C
program that connect to a database MySQL?
I've posted a message like it on sourceforce and a friend replied to
me that I'd have to download a "DevPak". Where can I get it?
Could You suggest to me a compiler that works with the API C of MySQL.

Hi,
I'm having trouble with the following:
In the MySQL 4 database I had the following values in an unique varchar
and there was no problem:
Gross
Gro?
(the latter has the german sharp "s" character)
Now whenever I import this into the MySQL5 database I get a duplicate
key error; I tried the collcations utf8_bin and latin1_bin already
(started out with latin1_german1 and latin1_german2).
How can I solve this?

- UPDATE instead of DELETEHi all,
is it possible to avoid deleting of a row when a DELETE query is
executed? I want to UPDATE row (setting for example a boolean field)

I can do this in Oracle and Postgres (with INSTEAD OF rule). Is it
possible to do this in MySQL?
Thank you in advance.

- Running two different binary .tar.gz versions
Hi all.
I have downloaded the statically linked binary,
mysql-standard-5.0.18-linux-i686.tar.gz
and got it working under the default prefix of
/usr/local/mysql, with the RPM version installed as well.
My problem is this. I would like to use the .tar.gz to
install the next update in parallel with this version.
i.e. two statically linked mysql binaries on the same
machine, with the latest version for testing on a different
port/socket/pid/datadir.
Can you please include the version number of the
distribution in the --prefix=xyz configure directive.
So this version would be --prefix=/usr/local/mysql-5.0.18
And the next version would be something like
--prefix=/usr/local/mysql-5.0.20
This would enable mysql users to then install the updated
binary version along with the previous version.
I could compile from source, but I would prefer not to, as
it takes a while, and I'd rather use the .tar.gz binary
provided by mysql.
I'm sure other's would appreciate this option for installing
mysql.
TIA

- Dynamic record sizes for HEAP engineHi All,
I've implemented dynamic record sizes for Heap Engine.
In a few words, if you have many large VARCHAR
columns, the record will take much less memory now. So
far, it works on my box and passes standard MySQL
tests. I'm wrapping up the code and preparing it to
commit back to MySQL.
Please, review the design notes and let me know what
you think about design. Please, take a look at the
issues listed at the end as well. The text below
covers some basics of the Heap Engine and explains how
variable-size records are implemented.
Thanks for providing this great product : )
Igor
=== Here is the design notes ===
/*
MySQL Heap (Memory) tables keep data in arrays of
fixed-size chunks.
These chunks are organized into two groups of
HP_BLOCK structures:
- group1 contains indexes, with one HP_BLOCK per
key (part of HP_KEYDEF)
- group2 contains record data, with single
HP_BLOCK for all records,
referenced by HP_SHARE.recordspace.block
While columns used in index are usually small, other
columns in the table
may need to accommodate larger data. Typically,
larger data is placed into
VARCHAR or BLOB columns. With actual sizes varying,
Heap Engine has to support
variable-sized records in memory. Heap Engine
implements the concept of
dataspace (HP_DATASPACE), which incorporates
HP_BLOCK for the record data,
and adds more information for managing
variable-sized records.
Variable-size records are stored in multiple
"chunks", which means
that a single record of data (database "row") can
consist of multiple
chunks organized into one "chain". HP_BLOCK contains
chunks. In variable-size
format, one record is represented as one or many
chunks, depending on the actual
data, while in fixed-size mode, one record is always
represented as one chunk.
The index structures would always point to the first
chunk in the chain.
At the time of table creation, Heap Engine attempts
to find out if variable-size
records are desired. If it determines that
fixed-sized records are sufficient,
it will always use one chunk per record and it will
not allocate space for any
chaining pointers inside the chunks. The text below
explains how the
decision is made.
The first parameter involved in the decision process
is HEAP_CHUNK_SIZE
parameter of the table. If it is not specified, we
assume that table should
use fixed-size record format. HEAP_CHUNK_SIZE has to
be able to cover
space needed for all null bits and columns used as
keys. In order to improve
index search performance, Heap Engine needs to keep
all null flags and all
columns used as keys inside the first chunk of a
chain. In particular,
this means that all columns used as keys should be
defined first in the table
creation SQL. The length of data used by null bits
and key columns is stored as
fixed_data_length inside HP_SHARE. fixed_data_length
will go beyond last
key column if more fixed-length fields can fit into
the first chunk.
Variable-size records are necessary only in the
presence of variable-size
columns. Heap Engine will be looking for VARCHAR
columns, which declare length
of 64 or more. If no such columns are found, table
will be switched to
fixed-size format. You should always try to put such
columns at the end of
the table definition.
Whenever data is being inserted or updated in the
table, Heap Engine will
calculate how many chunks are necessary. For insert
operations, Heap Engine
allocates new chain of chunks in the recordspace.
For update operations
it will modify length of the existing chain,
unlinking unnecessary chunks
at the end, or allocating and adding more if larger
length is necessary.
When writing data to chunks or copying data back to
record, Heap Engine
will first copy fixed_data_length of data using a
single memcpy call.
The rest of the columns are processed one-by-one.
Non-VARCHAR columns
are copied in their full format, while only
VARCHAR's are copied based
on their actual length. Any NULL values are skipped.
The allocation and contents of the actual chunks
varies between fixed and
variable-size modes. Total chunk length is always
aligned to the next
sizeof(byte*). Here is fixed-size chunk:
byte[] - capacity is chunk_dataspace_length, but
at least sizeof(byte*) bytes.
keeps actual data or pointer to the
next deleted chunk.
chunk_dataspace_length equals to full
record length
byte - status field (1 means "in use", 0 means
"deleted")
Variable size uses different format:
byte[] - capacity is chunk_dataspace_length, but
at least sizeof(byte*) bytes.
keeps actual data or pointer to the
next deleted chunk.
chunk_dataspace_length is set according
to table setup
byte* - pointer to the next chunk in this
chain, or NULL for the last chunk
byte - status field (1 means "first", 0 means
"deleted", 2 means "chained")
When allocating a new chain of N chunks, Heap Engine
will try to allocate chunks
one-by-one, linking them as they become allocated.
Allocation of a single chunk
will attempt to reuse a deleted (freed) chunk. If no
free chunks are available,
it will attempt to allocate a new area inside
HP_BLOCK. Freeing chunks will place
them at the front of free list referenced by
del_link in HP_DATASPACE. The newly
freed chunk will contain reference to the previously
freed chunk in its first
sizeof(byte*) of the payload space.
Here is open issues:
1. It is not very nice to require people to keep
key columns at the beginning
of the table creation SQL. There are three
proposed resolutions:
a. Leave it as is. It's a reasonable limitation
b. Add new HA_KEEP_KEY_COLUMNS_TO_FRONT flag to
handler.h and make table.cpp
align columns when it creates the table
c. Make HeapEngine reorder columns in the chunk
data, so that key columns
go first. Add parallel HA_KEYSEG structures
to distinguish positions
in record vs. positions in the first chunk.
Copy all data field-by-field
rather than using single memcpy unless DBA
kept key columns to the beginning.
2. "Chunk" does not sound very pretty in some
cases, like "chain of chunks".
A different (supposedly better!) name is not
necessary, but would be welcome.
3. HEAP_CHUNK_SIZE is a new parameter in table
definition SQL, please confirm it's OK
4. More stats may need to be exposed to display
effective table setup and stats,
such as chunk_length, chunk_dataspace_length,
average chain length, etc.
5. Handling of multibyte VARCHAR contents needs to
be verified
6. heap_check_heap needs verify chained chunks,
looking for issues such as orphans,
cycles, and bad links. However, Heap Engine
today does not do similar things
even for free list.
7. With new HP_DATASPACE allocation mechanism,
BLOB will become increasingly simple
to implement, but I may not have time for that.
In one approach, BLOB data can
be placed at the end of the same record. In
another approach (which I prefer)
BLOB data would have its own HP_DATASPACE with
variable-size entries.
8. In a more sophisticated implementation, some
space can be saved even with all
fixed-size columns if many of them have NULL
value, as long as these columns
are not used in indexes

- [mysql] Text = Tinytext = MediumText = LongText?
Hello everyone, hopefully a quick question: is there a functional
difference between the various text field sizes other than size? For
example if I wanted to could I run a FULLTEXT index against a LongText
field?
The collary is of course how good of an idea is this, assuming that MOST
of the data isn't even long enough to fill a text field.
Thanks,
Craig

I have a program that collects data and I can do a one-line shell call

The problem is that the program has all data in variables so I would
like to do something like this (postlog = after update):
postlog "insert var1, var2, var3 into database.table"
Can this be done in only one line shell call (program limit) or do I
have to write a script and pass variables?
If it can be done, how...

- MAX() and GROUP BY questionHello everybody
Can you explain me please how to get the entire row where ID is maximum per given status_id
Mysql 4.0.xx
for example:
id status_id name date
6 3 name0 date0
5 1 name1 date1
7 4 name3 date3
10 3 name2 date2
If I execute
SELECT MAX(id), status, name, date FROM table_name WHERE status=3 GROUP BY staus_id
or
SELECT MAX(id), status, name, date GROUP BY staus_id
only id and status_id will be returned correctly, while name and date can well be from another row

- query optimization help pleasehello,
i have a database where there is a main table, documents, and then a

return only documents with a doc_state entry of "NY"), but i need the
query to return ALL of the states that document pertains to. my
version of mysql does not support subqueries or exist clauses. a
sample query is
select distinct *, t2.topic_id as tid, t2.topic_desc as tdsc from
cap_documents d, cap_doc_topics dt, cap_topics t, cap_doc_states ds
left join cap_doc_topics dt2 on dt2.doc_id = d.doc_id left join
cap_topics t2 on t2.topic_id = dt2.topic_id left join cap_doc_states
ds2 on ds2.doc_id = d.doc_id where d.doc_id = dt.doc_id and dt.topic_id
= t.topic_id and d.doc_id = dt2.doc_id and d.doc_id = ds.doc_id and
d.doc_id = ds2.doc_id and d.display='Y' and match(d.doc_title,
d.summary, t.topic_desc) against('medicare* ' IN BOOLEAN MODE) order by
doc_year desc, d.doc_year desc, d.doc_title, d.author,
d.author_first_name
however, this query takes ten seconds or more to execute. output of

- how to use index with order by hereHi, im having troubles with one query, hope someone can help.
on this table:
messages:
id_from int(10)
id_to int(10)
text varchar(1000)
time
with index on id_form and id_to
i want to get messages sent from one user to another and vice versa order by
time.
let say we want to search messages between user 1 and 2:
i'm doing:
SELECT *
FROM messages
WHERE id_from in (1,2)
AND id_to in (1,2)
ORDER BY time
but that gives me a filesort in all rows matching the where clause, and
thats not good. I tried by indexing id_from, id_to, time but thats not
working of course.
any help would be really appreciate.

- mysql BUG, again ;)Hi,
I would like to know if you could fix the bug I reported to you
some days ago.
The error is: "ERROR 1030: Got error 139 from table handler" after
running an update command using several blobs.
Now I am using mySql 4.0.15 and Linux. If you try to do the same
with mySql 4.0.14, the record that is updated is simple deleted.
My System is a Debian Linux box , with kernel 2.4.20 with 768 of RAM
using InnoDB tables ;)
